2007 Convention Archive

Thank you to all the UERM MARVADC chapter members who volunteered their time to make the 19th Annual UERM Alumni Reunion and Convention a huge success.  Alumni attendees were in Washington DC from August 3-5, 2007 with two intentions:

1). reconnecting with classmates and colleagues and

2).  participate in the educational portion of the convention, which covered the Current Health Issues of Baby Boomers.

This year’s convention was graced with the presence of Dr. Joven Cuanang ’62, former Dean of UERMMMC College of Medicine who delivered the Dr. Jose Cuyegkeng Memorial Lecture on medical tourism in the Philippines.

The celebrating Jubilarians for this year are:
         Class ’62 – Sapphire (45 years)
         Class ’67 – Ruby (40 years)
         Class ’72 – Coral (35 years)
         Class ’77 – Pearl (30 years)
         Class ’82 – Silver (25 years)
         Class ’87 – China (20 years)

During this convention, the UERM MARVADC chapter launched its first Young Alumni travel grant awardees who had the opportunity to present their scientific paper during the CME portion of the Convention.

The awardees are:

1). Dr. Pia Velasco ‘04, a 2nd year resident in Dermatology at UERMMMC.  Her paper on “Case Discussion on Lymphoma Cutis” was presented by two of her classmates, Drs. Claire Natividad and Consuelo Clavecillas.

2). Drs. Therese Esagani-Elises, Paola Mendoza, and Adrian Velasquez (all three from Class 2004) presented their findings  on “ Survey of UERM Graduates Entering US Residency Programs, 2006-2007.

Dr. Esagani-Elises is now a Family Medicine Intern at University of Illinois, Rockford, IL;

Dr. Paola Mendoza is a Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Intern at East Carolina University, Greenville, NC, and

Dr. Adrian Velasquez is an Internal Medicine Intern at Carney Hospital, Dorchester, MA.

Another first for the chapter was the Young Alumni Mentorship Breakfast Workshop conducted by Dr. Nathalie Bernabe-Quion ’88.  This workshop was intended to start the discussion on how the alumni chapter can effectively work in assisting and advising new graduates as they embark in their search for training programs in the United States.

The 3-day convention ended on a positive note, with all the alumni enjoying not only the scientific portion, but also the social functions that were held each night at the JW Marriott on Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington DC.  For now, we look forward for the 20th Annual UERM Alumni Reunion and Convention in San Francisco.
